| Background: | Member States as represented by the National Directors of National Statistics Offices in the SADC Statistics Committee (SSC) identified that there was a gap in the capacity of statistical agencies and poverty concerned agencies in the region to process and analyze data about different aspects of poverty. The SSC therefore recommended that training workshop be organised within the SADC region to build capacity in national statistical offices and poverty-concerned agencies. In particular, the SSC recommended that the workshop focus on the processing and analysis of data collected in household budget or income and expenditure surveys and in living standards measurement surveys. In response to this recommendation and in collaboration with the World Bank and other development partners, the SADC Secretariat through JIMAT Development Consultants, conducted training and JIMAT organised a workshop to provide training to statisticians and other data analysts in the SADC region on poverty data analysis. |
| Objectives: | The overall goal was to build the national capacity of the SADC member states was to design and implement effective poverty reduction strategies. The PRSP preparations have led to increased demand for capacity building in poverty measurement and diagnostics, poverty monitoring and poverty impact evaluation. The objective of the national course was to strengthen the analytical capacity in SADC countries to analyze and monitor poverty data.
